Bill Scarborough kindly offered to drive us from the Malt Scoop in Merton, and we made good time. When we arrived Tony was there, on his own. He said it was his first time as Captain.
Tony had done the scorecards two days ago using the DMVGA spreadsheet, so the handicaps were out of date. We agreed that most handicaps probably hadn’t changed, and they could move either way, so we agreed to leave the scorecards as they were. Then we realised Tony hadn’t updated the RND handicaps when he did the scorecards. He had used the handicaps on the team sheet I’d sent him two weeks ago. We did some checks we decided to leave things as they were.
I noticed there were no tee-times on the scorecards, so I added them to ours and handed them out to the RND team. Tony added tee-times to the Yelverton scorecards. Then we noticed they were different. Tony had sent me the wrong tee-times. Luckily, we were playing half an hour later than we expected. Better than half an hour earlier!
This was why there were ten RND guys in the clubhouse, and only two from Yelverton. A couple of the RND guys were happy with this situation, as they now had time for some breakfast. Thank you to all the RND team members for not making a fuss about the situation, unlike some of Tony’s team.
It was disappointing to be playing off tee mats, which were well forward, but the greens were good despite the recent fertiliser and sand still being visible. Tee mats are always in use until April. Tony said we should move the fixture to later in the year so we can play off the proper yellow tees. We will do this.
We had four Emerton-Court squad players out first. Bill Scarborough and I only had 38 points, so we were lucky to get away with a half. Cliff Brown and Simon Trapnell had to get 46 points for their half. Rob Zukowski and Chris Buxton lost 2&1, which is no disgrace away. We were only one down at the halfway stage, but if it takes 46 points to get a half, we could be heading for a drubbing.
Brian Mitchard and Bob McDermot came in with a solid 5&4 win, with Bob only dropping one shot on the five par 3 holes. David Hudson and Bryan Palmer went one better with a 6&5 win. Bryan said he walked in because the hills had tired him out and their game had ended near the clubhouse … not because he had a lift home, his buddy Brian was in the bar, and he thought he'd “get on it". Our last pair were Chris Taylor and Ron Juniper, with a 4&3 win. Chris was praised by his opponents for his performance. Ron also contributed to the win, despite losing his glasses and his sand wedge.
The food was excellent, especially the chicken and leek pie, which was clearly home-made and came with extra gravy. Always a bonus. I'm not a leek fan but it had been chopped up small. A good tip to all would be cooks out there.
RND won the match 4-2 but we all failed to hit the 6th green from 137 yards. Tony kindly donated the bottle of wine to my Captain’s raffle. Only one Yelverton player hit the 6th green. Last year Tony won the nearest the pin and the same player still had Tony’s bottle of wine. It seemed right and proper that I should present the wine to Tony, which went down well almost everyone.
Two matches played. Different players for both. Ahead in both. A good start. Good luck to everyone playing in our next match, against Libbaton.
