Hot, hazy and humid it certainly was as 12 hungry men went hunting on the plains of Braunton Burrows in the return leg of the match against Saunton. The match was played on the East Course which was in great condition considering the lack of recent rainfall. The greens ran true and the rough was to be toyed with at one's peril.
Leading by 5pts after the home match and needing just a point to triumph overall we were given a good start as Andy Sutherland and Dave Hudson earned a hard fought half. Phil Hall and Ragaii Lora lost a close game (featuring many superb putts from Ragaii) 2 & 1. Next Geoff Tyler and Chris Taylor came from 2 down to win 3 & 2. In the 4th match Karl Ginger and George Fenton survived a one hole fight back by Saunton to triumph 6 & 4. Then Rob Zukowski and Pat Smith claimed the 18th hole to win the match 1 up. Finally Mark Christelow and Mike Saunders struggled manfully before succumbing 2 & 1 on the 17th.
A good meal of Steak and Ale pie, Sticky Toffee pudding and Coffee was enjoyed in great spirits afterwards and Seymour, the Saunton Captain presented Chris with the Trophy along with a bottle for his nearest the pin on the 17th green.
Thus a fine win on the day by 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 which meant an overall score of 9 to 3 and the Trophy resides for another year in our cabinet.
