RND Vets v Woodbury Seniors - Wednesday 17th September
Having secured a point and a half from the away leg way back in June, there was some confidence amongst the team that we might be victorious in the aggregate also. As it turns out, this confidence was not misplaced. With some of the worst weather imaginable, and the course in something of a dire state due to hollow tining on some fairways, the odds were stacked in our favour, but in the end I was quite pleased to have pulled a sicky myself, and left matters in the capable hands of Andrew Sutherland.
Aided by my last minute replacement, Karl Ginger (to whom I will be eternally grateful), the Captain’s pairing led the way with a 3&1 victory. Taylor and Coles followed suit, and in the match with the closest handicaps, Gaish and Pearce triumphed 7&6. Hood and Wickham managed a 4&2 victory in match 4, and Brown avenged a crushing 6&5 away defeat with a 3&2 win, albeit with a different partner in Tony Allin. Unfortunately, the only RND pairing to win away from home, became our only losers at home – Stirzaker and Pryor being defeated 3&1 at the end of the field.
Curry and dessert followed, and I am told by the opposing Captain that a great day was had by all. Having given them the option to cancel a couple of days beforehand, I am grateful to Ian Fry for sticking with it, and persuading a full team of hardy individuals to make the trip up.
